First, lets make it clear that these are MY current top winter horse care products. If you ask 100 different horse people about their favorites, you may get 100 different answers.
Even so, I think that these items, in one form or another, will make the list!
For The Horse: Winter Horse Care
The first item on my list is a turnout sheet, because even if you don’t blanket there are days where your horse will be out in the snow or rain. You definitely don’t want your horse to have a wet or damp coat.
I’ve chosen the Weatherbeeta Orican Original Standard Neck Lite Turnout Sheet.
The main things customers love about this turnout are its durability and fit. Believe me, when you get a group of horses out playing, grabbing and pulling on each others blankets, durability is HUGE!
Add to that the fact that Weatherbeetas pricing is always reasonable, a middle of the road price for a very well made product, and it is clearly a top choice for turnout sheets!
My next choice is the Tough 1 1200D Heavy Weight Ripstop Waterproof Turnout Blanket . This blanket will keep your horse warm in the coldest weather.
Tough 1 is a great choice for your wallet as these are priced for the budget conscious horse person.
But don’t let that fool you. This blanket has lots of very favorable reviews attesting to its durability. It holds up to harsh winter conditions and keeps your horse dry and comfortable.
The Tough 1 1200D Heavyweight Turnout Blanket comes in a ton of colors and sizes. It rates 4-1/2 out of 5 stars with 14 reviews!
And how about a Tomara Equestrian Polar Fleece Cooler for when your horse is a bit steamy after work…or after an extremely athletic turnout with “friends”?
The Tomara coolers are made with high quality polar fleece and with thick triple stitched trim. The finishing on this cooler makes it look much more expensive than it actually is.
The legs and breast straps are reinforced at the ends, and the legs straps are made with a durable elastic strapping to help stop tearing.
This sheet is ideal for making your horse look sharp at shows, and as a cooler after a brisk workout on chilly days.
All 7 of the reviews on Amazon for this cooler rate it at 5 stars! The comments “well made”, “high quality” and “durable” pop up frequently! Another moderately priced item that delivers a LOT of “bang for the buck”.
One more thing I would consider for winter horse care is a quarter sheet. There is a lot I like about the Centaur CC Cutback Exercise Sheet.
I love the way this quarter sheet is fitted to the horse and I like that it is a cutback sheet so that your horse can still feel your most subtle leg aids.
Not much choice in color because it comes in dark grey…but it certainly won’t clash with any other colors you have. 🙂
I think that when it is extra cold, or if your horse is body clipped and it is just normal-cold, it is important to cover and keep their large muscle groups warm while they are working.
The thermo-weave quickly wicks moisture away while insulating against chills. The Centaur Exercise Sheet is also easily secured or removed with a hook and loop closure at the withers.
For The Rider: Winter Horseback Riding
Comfortable winter riding pants, like TuffRider Ladies Unifleece Full Seat Pull On Riding Breeches, are my first priority for winter riding. I like to be warm and comfortable and these breeches do the job!
Made with a poly and spandex blend, these Breeches offer a comfortable fit with an UltraGripp faux leather seat for a secure saddle grip and Unifleece fabric for better warmth.
I always like full seat breeches because they make me feel more secure in the saddle.
These TuffRider Ladies Riding Breeches are made in a poly spandex blend and come in a variety of colors and sizes. They are reasonably priced, stylish and warm!
Another “must have” in the winter are the SSG Work ‘N Horse Lined Gloves.
They are lined which makes them nice and warm, yet they are supple enough to allow movement and feel making them ideal to ride in.
They are also great for working around the barn because they are water resistant; an important feature for when you are breaking ice out of those water buckets! 🙂
In case you enjoy feedback, there are over 20 reviews of the SSG Lined Gloves on Amazon with the overall rating being 4-1/2 out of 5 stars.
Last, but not least, for the rider, are a nice warm pair of winter riding boots. The most popular seem to be the Mountain Horse boots, like the Mountain Horse Ladies Ice High Riders.
They are not inexpensive boots but perhaps you can understand why by reading the following product description from Amazon:
- “The sleeker last and elegant features of the Ice Collection offer the same dry/warm protection as the original Rimfrost boots. Duralon shaft with heat-insulating Thermolite lining to keep legs and feet warm. YKK Vislon zipper has elastic inserts for an individual fit. Breathable waterproof HYDRO-Tx membrane prevents water from enter into the foot-part up to the zipper. Removable insole of cozy, warm pile-lining. Stirrup Control System incorporated in the outsole, and a steel shank for stability. Heel fitted with shock-absorbing IPS system. Fabric: Duralon/Hydrotech. Lining: Thermolite.”
Friends of mine own Mountain Horse Boots and love them. One of their benefits is their elegant looking, sleek style.
HOWEVER…if you would like to spend 1/2 as much money you can get the boots I ordered this year for just that reason, the Ovation Adult Dafna Blizzard Winter Boot.
I wanted a good winter boot and didn’t want to spend a lot. I am thrilled with them.
While maybe not as stylish as the Mountain Horse boots, they are very warm and very comfortable, both riding and just wearing them around in general.
The Ovation Winter Boot is rated 5 out of 5 stars by users and I can say for sure that I LOVE mine! 🙂
